City of Walls: Chapter 2

Outside my building I activated my integrated GPS to try and determine the best route for my destination by foot. Normally I would create set of directions for the highway, but that route was for powered transport only. Maneuvering over the city by foot would require a little ingenuity. Luckily for me the city was drastically behind on the revamping of the highways. Many 21st century roadways were intact, and still being used on a daily basis. Turning the netlink on my pinky clockwise activated a holopad, which hovered at the correct height for manual manipulation. Quickly I input my destination and queried the GPSI to guide me. The holopad stretched upward, creating a vertical rectangle approximately 1 by 2 feet. A satellite view of my current location hovered before me, using the silicon crystal on the ring to adjust the zoom of the visual, a feasible route outlined itself in the air. Ok that looks safe enough, I thought as I twitched my pinky to minimize the display to the palm of my hand.

With a glance at the traffic whizzing by, I started on my way to the jeweler's store. Turning to a path scarce of powered traffic, I found myself in a 3rd tier commercial district. Store fronted buildings lined the avenue, and the walkways were peppered with people. High over head, trans-lifts and pod hoppers speed off in orderly lines, with the wind whistling down from their passage, buffeting me in a chill breeze. Trash and leaves swirl across the sidewalk and into the empty street. Pixel Ads dance along the walls, trying vainly to draw the attention of passersby. I came to a stop in front of an ad-wall. My eyes swept across OLED covered surface, slowing to look at a tall, well trimmed woman. Her hair tumbled down her back in long red curls which stood in stark contrast to her pearly white skin. She reached a slim fingered hand up to tuck her hair behind her ear. The entire outer-rim of the lobe was encased in silver. Several small jewels of various colors were embedded along the edge of the silver. The woman pressed a dark lavender jewel and turned her head to the left, offering an unobstructed view of her mane. Her long tresses flattened out and darkened to a deep, silky mauve. Cybernetics, I thought, restraining a shudder.

I shrugged the shoulders of my warm jacket closer to my neck and check my map again. The route detours slightly to avoid a trans-hub. Dodging multiple lifts and rushing people would be too time consuming, not to mention the possible mishap of encountering a lift physically. Without nannites, the chance a paramedic would have time to administer a temporary nannite shot was nonexistent.

Passing through the shop way I am reminded of how much of the rest of the city I'd been isolated from. While transporting via powered pod, you're in a small envelope of metal, electronics, and plexi. As soon as my destination has been selected I connect to the server and start loading tickets. My net links were set to automatically start pulling data feeds in the morning, highlighting anything critical. In essence, I start working while I was almost 100 KM away from my work place. With so much data needing to be looked at, I never saw everything else. Except for those few times, those rare moments, in that barricaded building, with the others.

The vid! What could it be about! It was so long, so highly encrypted, it zapped up my bandwidth, and clogged my data storage. I'll have to see it soon! Wonder if I get any breaks, oh! Sonja sent me data too!

Flexing my fingers like a piano payer, the main menu of my net links popped up. Only two items appeared, the vid, and the info from Sonja's data dump. Opening up the later, a jumble of lines, letters, numbers, and pictures crowded the holopad, glittering faintly; hinting at some kind of meaning that I couldn’t quite grasp.

'throttle back the info' whispered at the edge of my mind. "There's no encryption! It's just jumbled together!" I exclaimed.

With a sharp intake of breath, I brought up my right hand, index, middle, and ring finger lined up together. Slowly, so the gyros in the rings on my fingers could read the movement correctly, I splayed my fingers wide/apart. The screen of sparkling lights before me intensified, then separated into four different documents.

Scanning the titles quickly, I notice that two are sensitive documents. Quickly selecting the delicate items with a tap of the index finger, my hand closes into a fist, then moves into the right front pocket of my jeans. A quiet beep emits from my ocular receiver, signals the completion of secure data storage. Luckily for me, everyone around me during the morning rush is wrapped up in their own electric cloud. I scan the walkers. Teenagers and children headed off to school. Most watching personal HD vid screens with just enough transparency to keep from stumbling. Some with no screens, but eyes that don't quite see, either listening to inner ear receivers, or possibly watching on screens implanted directly on the eye. More cybernetics.

Sighing, I file Sonja's SOA were it can be retrieved quickly, and focus on the last file hovering before me in mid air.

Hmm, looks like the order for my new netlink device. I do get a separate set for work! Nifters! Continuing on my route I think to myself, I need to hurry, my current netlink can't encrypt data, those delicate documents are safe for now, but I can't rely on the self-centeredness of others.

Turning the corner, I found myself in a deserted roadway. The buildings to either side were lifeless shells, no animals, no people, not even lights flickering behind shades. No lights!

There was a black out on the street, possibly most of the neighborhood. But why?

City of Walls: Chapter 1

2048 Present Day

Eeep, Eeep, Eeep. My hand flew out from under the covers, trying to smack the alarm into obedient silence. But it wasn't the alarm that awoke me, it was a warning buzzer from my Overview Screen.

Crap, not again, irritation springing in my brain, breath slowly huffed out in an attempt to calm nerves already singing in tension. Gazing at screen that displayed a predetermined info set from my automated apartment, perched on the wall near my bed, I groped for clean clothes, my mind racing for a feasible alternative for what the screen was telling me.

All ready at max power usage for the week! But I only used the travel pod for my outer office commute. Errands, and food stuffs were delivered and fuel costs were taken directly from my points account. I rationed my watts sparingly, only splurging on my bandwidth. BANDWIDTH! That was it! Fingers stroked the screen, bringing up the browser. All viewing panels had indeed been closed the night before. Then what took up the bandwidth, keeping the browser open, and sucking up watts? Tapping through queues, a delivery marker popped up. Gently, almost reverently, I caressed the screen, highlighting the packaged that had been downloaded to my home drive. It was a heavily encrypted video file, one that had the added security of having all the exif data stripped. Somebody is being real tight on this. Who would send something like this to me?

BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP, an alarm overhead sounded. Instinctively my hand shot out to silence the clock. 8:45! Almost late. I pulled the vid over to my netlinks. Disengaging the jeweled mesh of wires from my overview screen I scanned the room for any more necessities, placed the ring like emitters on my fingers, the dangles of receivers around my neck, the controllers around my wrist, I trotted out the door on my way to work.

As I entered the elevator of my building, I made sure that the jewelry styled mobile computer was charged and patched into the office line.

“Freidman’s” A disembodied voice chimed into my ocular receiver.

“Tara here, Sonj- I’m gonna be late. I” I spoke just loud enough for the audio mike on my lip ring.

“Tara, your deck isn’t more than a 5 minuet pod-hop from here.” Sonja replied scornfully.

“Yes, I know that Sonj. However my travel pod is indisposed at the moment.”

“Humph! Did you use all your watts again! You better watch out, or you’ll end up in a higher watt bracket, with more point deductions too!”

“I know, I know. Can you cover for me Sonja?”

“I can do better than that, actually. Mr. Freidman has told me to prepare you for the next tier. Basically you get to be a personal gopher. No one was scheduled to lose an aide until next quarter, and there has been a push, and a need, for an additional receptionist; so I’ll just take you on myself! It is a bit ahead of schedule…” Clacking sounds from her old keyboard could be heard.

“But who’s going to take my station at the file counter?”

“Oh, did you hear about Kenny’s live-in scoring a job?”

“Yeah?”

“She’s been taking pay, but so far just being eye candy for Kenny. Payroll’s about to cut her loose, but I think she can handle locating lost files in the server dungeon. Hee hee heh!”

“She's not a bad person, and it would do her good to learn a new skill. At least now when Kenny dumps her, she'll have somewhere to land. So what’s in store for me, and how does that help me not clocking in on time?”

"You such a do-gooder Tara, I should fix you up with this guy I know."

"Sonj, please don't lay into me already, it's not even 9 a.m.!"I sighed, What's so big a deal about dating? Most people don't even stay in relationships for long either.

“Alright, alright. Stop where you are so I can get a fix on you, as of now, you’re on the clock.”

"Sonj, I'm just hit the ground floor of my building." I hit the hold button on the panel beside the elevator doors, hoping it would keep me still long enough.

"Good, there are some errands to take care of in your near vicinity. And some clients, as well as partners who need a check up in person. Considering that you’re traveling bi-pedal today, that should take up your day just about. I’ll upload an itinerary, and some paper work, along with my Seal Of Approval to your netlinks."

I waited in silence as Sonja transferred files to my data storage. Aw crap! the vid. It took up a quarter of my meager storage.

"Tara, your netlink can’t handle the data stream. I can throttle back the info for now, you won't have an it itinerary, just call me for your next task. But first, it looks like you need an upgrade."

"Sonj- you know I can't afford that!"

"Just let me take care of that. Go on and head over to Goldberg's Jewelry store, we have a standing agreement with them."

"Alright, I trust that you'll mend whatever goes wrong. Hmm, Goldberg's, I think I know where that is, granted I’m usually zooming by at 120 KPS. I’ll get going in that direction.

"Don't forget, you have my SOA, use it like a shield. Now hurry up and get to work." Sonja's soft laugh lingered as she cut off my patch.

"Thanks Sonj." I said to myself. I wonder if they'll upgrade my storage, or give me a whole new link set?

With a new destination in mind, I headed out of the elevator at last.
