City of Walls

A while back, io9, had an environmental writing contest. I started a short story, but never finished it. Currently, it feels as though I have but a few paragraphs left. This story has evolved into the opener of another story I've been working on for sometime.
So without further ado,

City of Walls: Prologue pt 1
2013
No one knew Mexico had WMDs.

My mother had an office at the house. When I was younger I would get into so much trouble in there.

City of Walls: Ch. 1

2048 Present Day
          Eeep, Eeep, Eeep. My hand flew out from under the covers, trying to smack the alarm into obedient silence. But it wasn't the alarm that awoke me, it was a warning buzzer from my Overview Screen.

Outside my building I activated my integrated GPS to try and determine the best route for my destination by foot. Normally I would create set of directions for the highway, but that route was for powered transport only.

Walking ahead a few paces I looked around for signs of recent fire damage, or signs of decay. Some structures can be too old and weak to handle modern power. Electrical surges running into older wiring systems had a tendency to blossom into all kinds of trouble.

"Huh…I'm still not getting any readings." Carl said. He walked up to the girl crumpled on the street, and nudged her with his foot. He bent down and the green glow that encircled her head flowed through the air to the young man's head.

Sonja Fennelweigh was an oddity in the business world. She was the unofficial face of Friedman's Inc., Personal Assistant to Mr. Friedman himself, rumored to be in line for the VP, and came with a handy bag of unnumbered skills to boot. For instance, she'd been a coder since she could type.

Music played in the distance, a soft melody of harp and piano. I look up at Mom, sitting next to me. She smiles.

Fresh fireworks of pain erupted behind my eyes, as I stared wide eyed at the old man. "Ho, I mean, What are you talking about?" The file had no name, just two tags, which were cryptic to boot. 



City of Walls: Ch.8
Back in my deck, I walked to the fridge to get a drink. Drink lots of liquids. Water if possible, but anything will do. That's what the note from the paramedic said. As I opened the fridge door, my eyes wandered over to the table, with the brown package on top. 

City of Walls: Ch.9
I wiped the tears from my face and closed the holo screen. Nothing new, all alone again. If the Stockmans were arrested, its best that I not try to contact them.

City of Walls: Ch.10
 Meanwhile, at the other end of the hex, in the basement of an empty building, a trio of figures huddle in silence. 
 
City of Walls: Ch.11
"Yes Aunt Helena. I promise to stop taking shortcuts." The woman in the holo screen before me drew her lips up tight. A heart beat passed. She blinked and her lips returned to their usual soft, easy smile.

The credits rolled to a finish, and I waved my hand, bringing up the menu.
"Don't. Wait."Sonj swigged the last of her Dr. Pepper, as she motioned me to turn back to the movie.

"Let me get this straight." I rubbed my eyes with my hand as I stood over the kitchen table. "You left out all the anti-energy siphon code."
